Volunteer at FISH and Discover the Joy of Serving!

FISH volunteers are a great group of people and we’re excited that you’d like to be one of us!

To be able to volunteer at FISH you will need to be able to pass a background check, be on your feet for your whole shift (except those running distribution) and be able to treat our clients with compassion and dignity. We also ask that you make a 3-month commitment to volunteering at FISH.

Just a note, in all our work, it is important that rules and procedures be followed. Also, please be aware that we have clients and volunteers of differing abilities and we expect everyone to be treated equally. Pick a job or two below and put your choices on your application. Please understand that not all shifts are available all the time.

For immediate information about shifts available at this time, please see below. Information about each job continues down the page.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Warehouse

The warehouse stores all the food and supplies necessary to run the Pantry at FISH. Warehouse volunteers stock shelves in the pantry, sort through produce, organize the warehouse, receive donations and store them, do some light cleaning and other duties as necessary. The ability to life 40 pounds is preferable, as is self-motivation. You will need to be able to follow rules. You do not need to be outgoing to work in the warehouse, but you do need to be able to work both alone or in a team. Shifts are 2 – 5 hours long.

  • Location: 1513 North B Street, Ellensburg

Grocery Guides

Grocery Guides help clients through the pantry during distribution. They encourage clients to make food choices, let them know what quantities they can have, and generally keep the flow of the pantry moving well. If you work as a Grocery Guide, you will need to be able to walk the full 2 – 2.5 hour shift on busy days, and wait for clients on slow days. You will go in and out of the weather. You will need to be firm and friendly, and be able to follow rules.

  • Location: 1513 North B Street, Ellensburg

Open Table

The Open Table program serves meals four days a week. Volunteers helping with this service prepare, help cook, serve and clean up after the meals. There can be as many as 80 people at a single meal. Additionally, senior citizens can sign up for and eat meals at FISH four days a week though the Senior Nutrition Program, adding an additional 20 guests to the meals. To work in the kitchen, you’ll need to be able to pass a food handler’s card exam (after training), and be able to be on your feet for the entire shift. There may be some lifting up to 20 pounds. Additionally, you need to be able to be firm and friendly with the clients and be able to follow rules.

  • Location: Calvary Baptist Church, 507 North Pine Street, Ellensburg

Running the Distribution of Groceries

Each client who comes through the Pantry to get groceries has to check in at the front desk first. Volunteers on the front desk navigate special software and input client information. They assign Grocery Guides to clients and keep distribution moving. They also answer the phone and help clients with information about FISH and other resources. This is a long term job that requires good attendance. If you want to be on the front desk, you will need to have the ability to learn a new (and fairly simple) computer program, be able to type, and to sit for 2.5 – 3 hours at a time. You will also need to be able to handle multiple distractions at a time and be firm with clients when necessary. You will need to be able to follow rules and understand and follow state regulations.

Other Opportunities

Occasionally other opportunities come open for volunteers at FISH. Helping with mailings, events and special food drives are a few of the options. FISH emails all our volunteers as these other opportunities become available.

Your volunteers where kind and always came with a smile and a servants heart. Thank you all for a job well done.
