Summer Opportunities

WOW! It’s a great time to volunteer at FISH!

In the summer time, we lose our college age volunteers and are usually left struggling. But you can make a difference! Below are opportunities for every kind of schedule, every kind of activity! Spend some time giving back this summer and have a great time doing it!

Please note, you will need to go through FISH’s volunteer application process in order to be involved. Check out all the details on the Volunteer Opportunities page.

KERNEL – Kids Eating Right – Nutrition and Exercise for Life – is a new program this year, and one that’s going to be a lot of fun. Each Saturday FISH will be at the Farmer’s Market, helping kids learn about nutrition, gardening and exercise. Volunteers (that’s you!) will help kids navigate great activities such as Eat the Rainbow and the Bee Dance. Some weeks we need one volunteer and some two, but every week we need someone there! Can you help us out? See the schedule below and contact Elise Warren at [email protected] or 509-925-5990!

6/22: Bee Dance

Kids will learn to do their own bee dance and discover the unique way that bees talk with one another.

6/29: Eat the Rainbow

Kids will learn about the great nutrients that come from colorful fruits and vegetables.

7/6: Companion Planting

Kids will learn about companion planting while transplanting basil plants.

7/13: Parts of a Plant

Kids will learn about the parts of a plant while choosing roots, stems, leaves, flowers, seeds and fruits from a pile.

7/20: Farmer’s Market BINGO

Kids will get BINGO cards and look for clues throughout the Market about the Vendors and what they have to offer.

7/27: My Plate Investigation

Kids will learn about My Plate recommendations for various food groups. Drawing included!

8/3: Seed Match

Kids play a card matching game to learn about seeds and their plants.

8/10: Meet the Tubers!

Kids will learn about tubers while trying to guess what is in the mystery box.

8/17: Market Detective

Kids will look for produce with Vitamin A using magnifying glasses.

8/24: Community Gardens

Kids will make a rock painting to take home while they learn about community gardening.

Picnic in the Park is a tried and true favorite of kids and volunteers alike! Each summer FISH facilitates the USDA Summer Meals program and brings lunches to kids in parks throughout Ellensburg and Kittitas! This year is no exception – in fact we’ve expanded. We’re looking for volunteers who can work for a week at a time, during the day, and help out one of our three great supervisors. You’ll be setting up sites, handing out lunches, cleaning up and heading to another site! Please note: we have two supervisors in Ellensburg and one in Kittitas. If you’re interested in one of the weeks between June 17 – Aug 23, please contact Elise Warren at [email protected] or 509-925-5990.

In the Pantry, clients find the groceries that FISH offers. The warehouse stores all the food and supplies necessary to run the Pantry. Warehouse volunteers stock shelves in the pantry, sort through produce, organize the warehouse, receive donations and store them, do some light cleaning and other duties as necessary. The ability to life 40 pounds is preferable, as is self-motivation. Shifts are 2 – 5 hours long and are weekly. Other schedules are possible.

  • Location: 1513 North B Street, Ellensburg
  • Shifts Available:
  • Monday & Tuesday 9 – 5
  • Wednesday & Thursday 9 – 4
  • Friday 8 – 12

Ready to invest one morning a week? FISH needs drivers to pick up day old and still good groceries from five partner stores on Mondays. You’ll need to have a clean driving record to use our great van, or you can bring your own truck if you’re more comfortable. You’ll need to be able to lift 50 pounds repeatedly and be able to make it every Monday. This is a great shift for a family or a pair, or go it alone!

Currently open: Monday! (roughly 10:30 – 12)

Volunteer Today!

Remember, everyone who volunteers at FISH needs to go through our volunteer application process. This usually takes about a week before you can begin at a great volunteer position. So start today!!
