FISH strives to make summer special for kids.
It’s early morning, crisp and sunny. The FISH van pulls up and out tumbles all the great ingredients for a Farmer’s Market booth. A tent, tables, banners, and best of all, stuff to do!
Each Saturday FISH does just this – bringing our great new program to the Farmer’s Market! With the help of the Ellensburg Farmer’s Market and Kittitas County Public Health, FISH brings you KERNEL!
We’ve been having a lot of fun watching the kids come and learn about nutrition, exercise and gardening at our booth at the east end of the Market (near Safeway). Hundreds of kids have already participated, learning about bees, planting plants together to help them grow, the role of farmer’s in our life and much more! Part of the fun for them is picking out $2 worth of fruits or veggies from the market sellers using the coupons they get for participating.
There’s even more coming up. We’ll be at the Market through August 24th, right before the Fair. Come out and join us!
For a list of upcoming activities check out our KERNEL page.
Picnic in the Park
Every weekend morning, a group of individuals come together. Their minds are on feeding kids and they got the routine down pat. Pick up the meals, go to the parks, help the kids. What’s better then that?
Picnic in the Park (a USDA Summer Meals program) has been operating in Kittitas County for nine years now. Each year a dedicated team of people packs lunches, delivers them and makes sure that kids can eat them for multiple locations throughout the county.
This year FISH is serving in Kittitas and Ellensburg, using local schools as kitchens for creating delicious meals. (Thank you Ellensburg and Kittitas School Districts!) And while the locations can change from year to year, the great participation by local staff and volunteers is a wonderful gift to the area’s children.
For more information about locations and times, see our Picnic in the Park page.
Back to School Night
They all line up in anticipation. Inside, they’re excited too, putting the finishing touches on the tables and lining up to each greet a child. It’s time once again for Back to School Night.
In this its the fourth year, Back to School Night will be the same wonderful event. With hot dogs and lemonade, a special guide for each child and all the school supplies a kid needs to go back to their classroom in the fall. Each kid gets a backpack and the pencils, paper and other necessities specific to their classroom.
This event is open to all established clients of FISH. If your child is going to school in one of the school districts in the county, they can choose their own things to use for the year.
What’s better then a great birthday? Candles, balloons, presents and of course a cake! What child isn’t excited to add another year to their name? Unless of course your family can’t afford all that wonderful stuff. Then maybe it’s not so fun.
FISH is striving to change that for all our littlest clients. We have gathered together all the ingredients for a good party and filled a bag with them. A Birthday Bag! They are available to all our clients with children turning one through ten within two weeks of the child’s birthday.
This is the one summer program that won’t go away when the summer ends. If you are a client, then come down and help your child enjoy their special day. Just ask for a bag!
If any of these sound like fun to you – perhaps something you would have loved as a kid – consider making a donation to our Krazy 4 Kittitas County Kids campaign. You money goes straight to helping kids with these programs this year.
