Senator Warnick . . .Sample Letter to Senator Warnick
Senator Warnick is on the Ways and Means Committee of the Washington State Senate. Currently the Ways and Means Committee is considering a request by FISH for money to help us with our new warehouse and pantry.
FISH volunteers have asked for a sample letter to help them frame a letter to urge the senator to have the Ways and Means Committee fund this request. FISH is providing this Sample Letter to Senator Warnick as a way for all FISH supporters to lend their aid to our cause.
Over 30% of the food distributed by FISH goes to homes with school-age children present.Sample Letter to Senator Warnick
Since the beginning of 2019, 1,535 children and teens have received groceries at FISH. Some of those are duplicates who come each month. But that is still 1,535 visits worth of food going out to children and their families.
People are sometimes surprised by the number of children affected by hunger in our county. While they may get free or reduced breakfast and lunch, there is still dinner to consider. Scientific studies have shown that children do not perform as well in school, and develop behavior problems more often, when they are hungry and/or undernourished.
FISH’s new building will have a larger pantry and warehouse than we have here at Mercer Creek. There will be an education room that allows clients to learn how to use the food that we offer, and learn about nutrition and healthy eating. Just like we are now offering classes in eating healthy for diabetes, FISH will be in a position to offer education to all our clients about healthy eating habits.
During the summer, FISH provides over 7,000 free lunches to Ellensburg’s children so they do not go hungry.Sample Letter to Senator Warnick
FISH’s Picnic in the Park summer programs is partly supported by the USDA. Last year we had four parks where we distributed lunches to any kid who chose to come and eat. That added up to more than 7,000 lunches! After lunches (on most days) there would be an activity for kids provided by Ellensburg Parks and Recreation, KEEN, the Book Mobile and Ellensburg Reads!
Many, if not most, of these kids go without lunch, or with something small, during the summer. Their parents work and they may be left alone at home. Or, perhaps their parents just don’t have much and it’s a good meal for their kids.
FISH is looking to add another park this year, and serve even more meals! FISH has a number of great programs for kids, two of which will debut this summer! Stay tuned.
More than 32,000 meals are served annually to the elderly, home bound, and working poor. FISH is the largest hot meal program in our county.Sample Letter to Senator Warnick
FISH does not have it’s own kitchen. Did you know that? There is no kitchen in the FISH campus. There is a tiny room with one oven, one sink, and one refrigerator. It does not have a stove or dishwasher. There is no washing machine for linens used in the kitchen. Everything is sized for a home.
Currently, and in the past, FISH has used church kitchens. Bringing supplies to the churches and returning with hot food kept to temperature takes extra time, cost and work. FISH needs a kitchen.
FISH’s new building plan calls for a full sized commercial kitchen. It would include all the cool stuff: convection oven, six or eight burner range, large refrigerators etc.
And not only will FISH use this kitchen, but it will also be a teaching kitchen. While folks learn to cook, FISH will help them grow their skills and use their talents. And FISH will reap the reward of their ideas and enthusiasm!
FISH is the only Food Bank in our county. Through FISH, five Food Pantries receive food and help serve some of the most rural areas of Kittitas CountySample Letter to Senator Warnick
Most people don’t realize the difference between a Food Bank and a Food Pantry. It’s simple really. FISH works with the State and Federal Governments to receive food and funds and passes those on to the five food pantries in the county. This includes our own pantry!
There are four other pantries in Kittitas County. Not only do they receive, but they send back information. It is through all these pantries that we are able to help 3,000 individuals in a month!
FISH’s new warehouse will be huge compared with this one. It will have an indoor freezer and cooler large enough to hold a number of pallets, the height to accommodate tall pallet shelves and room to use the forklift to it’s full extent. This new building is one of the largest additions to the current building and will be state of the art!
This Sample Letter to Senator Warnick is a great way to help FISH reach it’s goals.
