It’s February and believe or not, it’s time for Munch Madness. No, not that March Madness, Rotary’s own Munch Madness. Each year the Ellensburg Morning Rotary Club harnesses together the power of the community in a huge food drive to benefit our work here at FISH.
Here’s how it works: the community comes together into groups (schools, businesses, churches and clubs for instance) and competes to see who can donate the most food. Each year Munch Madness bring in 15,000 – 20,000 pounds of food. Yep – that much!
This food drive is amazing for FISH. Each year this food lasts through the spring and into the summer, helping thousands of families. Did you know the FISH Food Pantry serves between 500 and 550 families in a month, an average of 11,000 individuals? A month. That’s a lot of help that this food drive provides.
After Thanksgiving and Christmas, donors get tired. It’s the long blah months of winter, and I believe they feel that we must have gotten what we need during the holidays. And we do get a LOT of wonderful donations that help people throughout the winter. Everyone’s generosity at that time makes a big difference for those in the community who need our help.
However we really need more to pull us through. Individual donations account for more than 63% of our total gift in kind giving each year. A gift in kind donation is simply one other than money – such as food or time. And the number I just gave you – 63% – is only a statistic about food donations. Our volunteer hours are another thing.
Speaking of volunteers – let me give a shout out to all the Ellensburg Rotary Clubs! They staff the tables during Munch Madness drop off days (each Friday). Then they weigh in all the food and sort it into bins by type.
Did you know that all our food is weighed in and out? Even the food that spoils (and it does happen from time to time) gets weighed before going to bins for our pig farmer to pick up. Yep – pigs get all the leftovers, so no food is wasted here!
So now is the time to come together, with your work friends, your clubs, your school and pick a dedicated group of people. Even if you don’t make the top tier, you’ll be paired up with another group for the next round, so everything can participate the whole month. Won’t you join us and the Rotaries for this great event?<div class='sharedaddy sd-block sd-like jetpack-likes-widget-wrapper jetpack-likes-widget-unloaded' id='like-post-wrapper-136327691-3215-5ce5d7b083eba' data-src='https://widgets.wp.com/likes/#blog_id=136327691&post_id=3215&origin=kvfish.org&obj_id=136327691-3215-5ce5d7b083eba' data-name='like-post-frame-136327691-3215-5ce5d7b083eba'><h3 class="sd-title">Like this:</h3><div class='likes-widget-placeholder post-likes-widget-placeholder' style='height: 55px;'><span class='button'><span>Like</span></span> <span class="loading">Loading...</span></div><span class='sd-text-color'></span><a class='sd-link-color'></a></div>
